Post Rain Storm Update

Well, the girls have the flu. Which brings me to my current “avoid the flu” regimen, which is to take Airborne Health and drink the Republic of Tea’s Organic Temple of Health Herb Tea. We’ll see how I faire. Anyway, the garden took some beatings.

The front beds, which aren’t doing that well anyway given their 4 hours of sun a day, are fine from the rain. They are raised beds, with a bunch of stunted, bolting, winter crops, which is perplexing. I’m going to dig them all in, save a couple of herbs, and add a bunch of compost and start over.

The pots alongside the house took the worst of it. Our house has about 3 feet on each side of it to the lot line, and in the summer, it makes a nice place to grow veggies in pots. It gets warmth from the house, 8-9 hours of sun, and wind protection but still moving air. In the rain, however, the runoff from the roof comes dripping off the house in huge amounts. We don’t have gutters, so you can imagine the slanted roof creates some serious water flow. This did some serious damage to my lettuces out there, killed my beet seedlings, and left the carrots a little worse for wear.

My new pride and joy, the rooftop garden, despite the wind and the rain, is doing great! I really can’t overemphasize what a difference giving the veggies 7 hours of sun versus 3 along the house is. The seedlings grow lower to the ground, forming stronger root supports, they grow much faster, and I was so excited I threw some more pots up there. I’m working on finding the cheapest, deep container I can use for pots, and I’ll write up my results when I nail it. I think Home Depot might be in the cards this weekend.

your thoughts on this post:

I really like beets! On the suggestion of my wife, we started growing them a couple years ago. I’d be really intested in seeing what your rooftop garden looks like, any chance of posting a few pics online?
