This site will help make you a better cook, an adept gardener, and good-looking. Also, I'm not from or in Tuscany, and I'm a man.
When I can figure out how to get a list of the other posts in this category here, it will be. For now, just some pictures. =)
I’ve been growing quite a few radishes of various types on the rooftop garden, and I’m learning a lot about growing them. These are some of my tips and pointers, because even though they are easy, there are still tricks to getting great radishes.
Since the plant is generally listed as “partial shade happy”, I figured I’d try and push this one. No such luck. Radishes not germinated with enough sun will take a long time to form their root, and it will not taste like what you want; even if you remedy the situation when the plant is young.
I’ve just come to putting them in mostly compost mix. The high organic matter level keeps the soil moist, and when I’ve let it get too dry the result has been woody radishes. Also, woody equals very pungent on our roof.
Not because it seems to affect the plant so much, but because they spread. Luckily, on the rooftop aphids bring ladybugs almost instantly. Very different than the side yard.
Some plants have shown very different growth based on the depth of the pot. Radishes, surprisingly to me, not so much. I’ve been quite pleased with the French Breakfast Radish grown in about 8 inches of soil. Don’t try that with the rapini though, they like it deep. 14 inches at least.
Hopefully some of these tips will help you with your radishes, and now I’ve got these notes recorded for my next batch. Hopefully I’ll be showing off some tomato, chile, and eggplant seedlings in the next few days… =)
